Parent & caregiver guide

When your child is anxious about school

Anxiety is a smoke alarm that goes off when there's no fire. Reassurance feels helpful in the moment but teaches the brain that the worry needed answering. What actually shrinks anxiety is doing the scary thing in small doses while you stay steady beside them.

What to look for

Common signs

  • Repeated "what if" questions and needing reassurance over and over
  • Trouble falling asleep the night before school events
  • Perfectionism, erasing, or refusing to turn work in
  • Physical complaints with no medical cause
  • Avoiding raising a hand, the cafeteria, or the bus

Practical strategies to try today

  1. 01

Validate first, then move: "That makes sense that it feels scary. And we're still going."

  2. 02

Answer a worry question once. After that, respond with, "You already know what I'd say."

  3. 03

Practice a 4-in / 6-out breath together twice a day when calm, so it's available when it's not.

  4. 04

Break the scary thing into a ladder โ€” visit the school building, then the classroom, then a full period.

  5. 05

Protect sleep and mornings; anxiety doubles on 6 hours of sleep.

How to bring it up

Conversation starters

"What does the worry tell you is going to happen?"

"On a scale of 1โ€“10, where is it right now? What moves it down one point?"

"Has the worry ever been wrong before?"
