Phones, social media, and a brain that never gets to rest

Phones are not the enemy โ€” they are where your child's social life lives. The problem is that the school day now follows them home. Comparison, group-chat conflict, and algorithmic content hit a developing brain that cannot yet regulate it. The goal is not a total ban but guardrails your child helps design, so the phone stops running the household.

What to look for

Common signs

  • Mood clearly drops after being on the phone
  • Sleeping with the phone and waking to check it
  • Big secrecy, panic, or rage when asked to put it down
  • Comparing their looks, body, or life to what they see online
  • Withdrawing from in-person friends and activities they used to like

Practical strategies to try today

  1. 01

Charge all phones outside bedrooms overnight โ€” parents included. It's a house rule, not a punishment.

  2. 02

Write the plan together on paper: hours, apps, what happens if it slips. Buy-in beats enforcement.

  3. 03

Replace, don't just remove. Every hour taken off the phone needs somewhere to go.

  4. 04

Follow the accounts they follow for a week and ask curious questions instead of reacting.

  5. 05

Model it. Put your own phone in a basket during dinner and say out loud why.

How to bring it up

Conversation starters

"What's the best thing on your feed lately? What's the worst?"

"If you were the parent, what phone rule would you actually pick?"

"Does your phone ever make you feel worse about yourself?"
